On their hike up Diamond Head, Heather discovers that Steve's claustrophobic. In this part of the scene, they're talking about getting counseling for it, and other issues. Steve tells Heather that the main reason he started getting counseling was that he wanted to be a "superstar husband and father" but knew he needed help to get there.
Do you understand how Steve feels? Do you have issues from your past that might make it difficult for you to be a great spouse or parent? What have you done about it?
The epistles of the New Testament were written for two basic reasons:
- To teach believers about the triune God
- To teach believers about becoming more Christ-like
So there are an abundance of passages that tell us we can become Christ-like in spite of our past. Can you find passages that help you understand how that works. (The Apostle Paul said we are "new creatures" or creations, depending upon which version of the Bible you use. Use a concordance to find those passages. Use cross-references to explore the idea more fully.)
After seeing what the Bible says about becoming Christ-like, do you have more confidence that you can? Do you want to be different? Are you willing to suspend your dating life until you learn more about being a new creature? How can your friends help you?
